Travelling south for Christmas was an interesting operation. I tried a new route, via Narvik Luleå Haparanda and Kemi to Helsinki. You dont need to travel too far to find bus routes which dont keep their schedule. But the expensive hotel in Haparanda was a very much more comfortable place to sleep than train. A new experience to stay in a hotel which provides beadclothes and breakfast.. Another weird experience was to walk across the border to Finland in dark and quiet early morning in the middle of a road (sidewalks were icy). No sign of life anywhre except some cameras watching. Miserable sceenery from train window in Finland: a grey, concrete box type of shopping centre in the middle of flat, greenish fields wrapped in fog. With christmas lights hanging outside, water dripping from them. Good try but gave no major christmas-feeling. Today Ive seen the sun in the forest:)
